Tips on Building a Free Website- For Beginners

Web design has improved greatly throughout the years. Today, anyone with access to smart devices or computers is able to create a website in minutes. An article posted on tgdaily.com, in 2017 states that "There are over 644 million active websites out there, and the number is constantly growing." After further research, firstsiteguide.com reports "As of June 18, 2021, there are currently over 1.86 billion websites online." This shows the tremendous growth of websites in only 4 years. For beginners, there are many great options for free website building software. This could possibly be a contributor to the growth in websites.

Best Free Software to Choose From

Wix allows you to create customized sites, both personal and business, with no prior web design or coding experience. According to bmmagazine.co.uk  "One of the most popular website builders at the moment, ... create a basic site for free or to upgrade to paid versions for additional features." Wix is easy to use, free and builds exceptional websites.

Weebly is another user-friendly website builder that offers both a paid and free version. They also offer online selling features as well. This downside to Weebly is that it offers fewer customization options than other website-builders. This is a contributor to why Weebly is the less popular option than some of the others.

Google sites is also another great option and is completely free. In fact, I used Google Sites to make my own personal website. Google sites allows you to create simple, efficiently structured websites. This option would be best used for personal sites.

Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

  • Keep your focus on the purpose of your website.

When you stay focused on the purpose of your website and what you want it to accomplish, you are more likely to avoid mistakes.

  • Be informative

A website that does not include enough information is not going to be perceived well by viewers. You want to give out all of the information you can about your business or personal site. This will encourage response from viewers instead of being turned away due to a lack of information.

  • Easy navigation

The more organized and the easier to navigate, the better. People on the internet can be easily overwhelmed or frustrated when they can not easily navigate through websites. This can result in a big decrease in traffic and engagement.

  • As techzone360.com puts it, avoid using a "one size fits all" website design."

A more unique design will generate more traffic and engagement. A website design catered to your specific purpose will be more effective and can encourage more response.

  • Avoid using too many graphics and images

This can be off-putting and distracting for viewers. Too many photos or graphics can take away from the content being displayed on the website.

There is no one size fits all when it comes to choosing a website building site. Best of luck on your journey and have fun experimenting and creating the website that is just right for you.
